Years 9 & 10
Years 9 & 10 students have been exploring Portraitutre. Students took a photograph of their face and drew. Students investigated 1 point and 2 point perspective, culminating their Interior Perspective piece. Students could choose thrown materials, and they varied enormously and included fabrics, to inks, markers, acrylics, shellac and high gloss acrylic varnish.
'Street art has become a global phenominon which accurately represents culture as it is today' was our Statement of Inquiry for this unit. Students investigated street artists such as Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Invader and yarn bomb artists and designed their own tiles, which they planned to display around the school.

Year 10
Exploring, designing and creating contemporary sculpture inspired by Mexican Oaxacan sculpture, Huichol yarn art and Mexican bead art. Students were introduced to various forms of Mexican art such as Oaxacan sculpture, Huichol yarn art, and beading. After exploring each of these art forms through investigations including cited imagery from the Internet and books with notations about materials, themes, and cultural connections, students then designed a sculpture which utilized materials and inspiration from at least 2 out of the three art forms. The theme of the sculpture had to relate to contemporary Mexico in some way but could also reference historical influences. |

Felt-making is a very ancient process. The earliest surviving felt is 5000 years old, preserved by the permafrost of Siberia and now in The Hermitage Museum. It was made by nomadic tribes, probably in the same way that modern nomads in Mongolia make felt for their yurts and clothing.
True handmade felt is a non-woven piece of matted material made from sheep's wool, alpaca wool, angora goat or rabbit fur, llama hair, or another animal fiber. It is not the same as the acrylic craft sheets we commonly call "felt" that is found at most craft stores.
